Chapter 6

The next morning, Samantha had just finished feeding Caroline her breakfast when she heard a car pull into the drive. Peering out the kitchen window, she spotted a sleek white limousine taking up enough space for at least two decent-sized vehicles.

“Mother!” she hollered as loud as she could without scaring the baby.

“Yes, dear?”

Her mother stood at the bottom of the stairs. Without her makeup, she looks exactly like me, Sam thought. And much younger. She was wearing a mauve sundress with camel-colored sandals. “Mom, you want to explain that?” She nodded toward the drive.

“Samantha, there is nothing to explain. And Happy Mother’s Day to you, too,” her mom said sweetly.

Shoot, how could she have forgotten? She hadn’t slept well; Caro had tossed and turned most of the night in her new Pack ’n Play. All she’d thought about this morning when she came downstairs was coffee and feeding her daughter.

“Mom, I’m such a poop! Come here,” she said. She placed her one free arm around her mother’s shoulders. “Happy Mother’s Day. I didn’t mean to blow the wind out of your sails. I was just feeding her, and then I heard a car pulling into the drive. I thought Stella and Evelyn were here. Not a limo. Mom, exactly why is there a limousine parked in the drive?”

“It’s part of your surprise. Spa day, remember? This is your first Mother’s Day. Last night your father called in a favor, and now we’re traveling to the spa in style. Isn’t that exciting?”

Smiling, Samantha thought this sounded just like something he would do. Always that little extra. When she was growing up, he’d always said nothing was too good for his girls. Having received a small inheritance from his father, he never dipped into it except for special occasions. He’d said his salary as a police officer and her mother’s income from the library was plenty for a family of three to live on comfortably, but Samantha knew there was no mortgage on the house and that her father bought new cars every three years and always paid in cash. Money was never an issue growing up, and apparently, that hadn’t changed. Not that the cost of hiring a limo was earth-shattering, but it meant a lot that he’d taken the time at the last minute to ensure that her first Mother’s Day was special, memorable.

Taking a deep breath, Samantha said, “It’s very exciting. Where is he anyway?”

“He’s in the garage putting a little walker together for the baby. Thought we could use it as a temporary high chair, and she’d have the added benefit of learning to push it around with those precious little legs.”

Why hadn’t she thought of that when they were at Target last night? “A great idea, Mom. I didn’t even think about a high chair. I always hold her when I feed her.” She felt silly and inexperienced.

“Your lifestyle was different, Sam. And this is your first baby. You’ll get the hang of these things soon enough.
